Reuters reports that Hugo Chavez, the socialist president of Venezuela, says that “Bush is to the left of me now.” He gives the reason when he points out that President Bush, “announced he will buy shares in private banks.” Hugo Chavez has been criticized for nationalizing his oil industry and other sectors of the economy of Venezuela. He does have a point that there isn’t much difference. The article continues to blame it on the crisis we are in but socialism is still socialism. It never works and it is what got us in the mess to begin with.

I heard a little bit of the Rush Limbaugh show today. Roger Hedgecock, who today substituted for Rush, was interviewing Richard Miniter, the autohor of Shadow War: The Untold Story of How Bush Is Winning the War on Terror. I only heard 10 minutes or so of the interview but that little bit of time made me want to read the book. Miniter said that he had traveled throughout the world to do research on how the war on terror is going. His outlook on the whole thing is totally different than what you tend to here on the radio. One statistic was that “Since 9/11 we’ve killed or captured 3,000 Al-Qaeda terrorists in 102 countries.” This is entirely different than anything we hear in the media. The media along with the rest of the left continually focus only on apparent negatives and totally ignore the positives that are occurring throughout the world. While our intelligence concerning weapons of mass destruction may have been wrong, why don’t we hear more of Libya’s move to cease it’s nuclear weapons programs? Why don’t we hear from anybody but the President concerning the elections that are going to happen in Afghanistan? The reason is that the left and specifically John Kerry do not care what Bush has done, they will call it wrong and they will call it lies. They only want to win an election, no matter what the cost.
I received the latest issue of World Magazine today. Joel Belz has written a thoughtful article titled Doubts about “W”. He interviewed 50 people who have doubts about Bush to see what areas they were concerned about. The article is very good about pointing out a lot of the economic concerns that a lot of conservatives have and does not ignore the “frustrations” that many have with Bush over social and Biblical issues.
I’m not convinced that voting for a third party is the only Biblical thing to do (I’m open to exegetically based reasons), but at times I’m not to sure that Bush is any better than a Democrat on many issues. Belz says that, “Newspaper publisher Warren Smith from Charlotte, N.C., is more optimistic. He thinks George Bush might yet out-Reagan the Reagan revolution, waiting until a second term to show his true conservative colors. ‘Bush wants to go more conservative than he has–that’s his gut and his impulse. But he’s also disciplined and pragmatic–that’s his training and the result of the infrastructure around him.’” I’m not totally sure whether this is true or not. I’m also not sure whether if true if it is actually a good or bad thing.
I ask my friends who lean more toward the vote your conscience position (see Faithful Voting) whether it is ok to strategize when you vote. If a good third party candidate doesn’t have much chance of winning (even if everyone who would be interested in voting for him really did vote for him) then is it necessary to vote for him when the candidate who totally supports abortion and activist judges will likely win?
I have an idea who the right candidate in a ideal world would be. I also believe that we are heading toward that ideal world and will basically arrive there at some point in the future because of the spread of the gospel. Is it necessary to try to get there tomorrow through our vote when there would probably be a popular revolt in four years? I’m not totally convinced one way or the other at the moment, but I am open to Biblically based arguments.
Something to rejoice over in 2004 is the fact that a lot of the provisions of the so called “Brady Bill” are set to expire in 2004. Hopefully a Republican congress will demonstrate enough courage to not extend these provisions. The most annoying part to me personally, is the ban on “Large capacity ammunition feeding devices.” When I grew up we would go outside on our farm and target practice with our Ruger 10/22. It’s a 22 and has probably rarely been used in a violent crime by a law abiding citizen. One of the greatest things with target practice is having a good 30 round magazine. This means you don’t have to reload continually. When the Brady Bill or one of its parts was passed Clinton outlawed all magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. The whole concept is stupid. What hardened criminal is using a 10/22 with a 30 round clip to kill people? While criminals use Assault Weapons that they get illegally, law abiding citizens like myself are prohibited from certain weapons because the left doesn’t like them.
It seems clear to me that the left doesn’t want law abiding conservatives to have any rights. It is also most clear that they do not want any Christians around. I’m sure the British would have been overjoyed in 1776 if the colonists did not have any guns. Please support the NRA and President Bush who is more likely to make the right decision about guns and other items that will allow us to stop our country’s massive move to the left.
I’ve been reading some interesting articles on President Bush and current federal spending. The philosophy being promoted by some is to cut taxes in such a way that will force the government to eventually cut spending and become smaller. The idea is to starve the beast. More information can be found at Insults Unpunished.
I’m not sure what I think about it all at the moment but the idea is definitely interesting. There is also Starve the Beast: Join the Global Tax Revolt at Amazon but it is out of print.
R. C. Sproul Jr. has written a good post titled No Children Left Behind on a large inconsistency of President Bush (and lots of “conservative” politicians) concerning abortion. If life begins at conception then all abortion is murder and we must remember that. While President Bush has done some good he is definitely not a President that Christians should think does only good or does only right.
I am in the midst of reading Entebbe: A Defining Moment in the War on Terrorism: The Jonathan Netanyahu Story. I grew up in a Baptist Church where the pastor subscribed to the Jerusalem post. I have heard him talk many times about Entebbe, the Six Day War, and all the other happenings of this century with Israel. I haven’t finished this book yet but am highly impressed so far. The leader of the raid on Entebbe was Jonathan Netanyahu brother of the author. From what my Baptist pastor has said may times and what I’ve read of this book so far, the Israelis are much more decisive in their responses to terrorists than we are. It seems though that the current Bush has learned from history and from Reagan and is doing better than others have. I would recommend this book if the doings of Israel in this century interest you at all.
For those who may not keep up on current events, don’t forget that the State of the Union Address will be given by President Bush at 9:00 PM tomorrow. It should be very intersting and informative. It will also probably help to define clearly the focus President Bush will have as he runs against the many Democrats in the election.
For some balanced reporting I would suggest Fox News. If you are already curious you can read some speculation concerning what the President may discuss.
